  • Naperville Jaycees in partnership with Windy City Amusements will debut new carnival rides at the 2025 Last Fling in downtown Naperville from August 29 to September 1. The event will feature thrill rides like the Sky Rider and Zipper, family favorites like the 65-foot Giant Century Wheel, and attractions such as Pirate Island—promising fun for all ages.  Positively Naperville

CRIME NEWS

  • A Glen Ellyn man received a 7.5-year sentence after pleading guilty to drug-induced homicide for giving his girlfriend fentanyl that caused her death after a drug purchase in Oak Park—he must serve 75% of his sentence before he can try for parole, officials said.  FOX 32

  • Naperville native Bob Odenkirk was seen in New York’s West Village wearing sunglasses and a Chicago Cubs cap—he is promoting his action film Nobody 2. He stars as Hutch Mansell, an ordinary dad on vacation in Wisconsin Dells who finds himself in trouble.  Daily Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Naperville Unit Education Association filed notice of intent to strike after teachers voted to authorize a strike as contract talks with the school board stalled, which could lead to a work stoppage interrupting classes as early as Monday, Aug. 25. The union said the filing was required by law and a rally is planned for Monday, Aug. 18 while negotiations with a mediator resume on Tuesday, Aug. 19 — salary proposals remain the main sticking point.  Naperville News 17

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Last spring, two sandhill crane chicks arrived at DuPage Wildlife Conservation Center after being separated from their injured parent, and staff cared for them with help from another injured crane that became a foster parent — after rehabilitation, the blended family was released to the wild and has been seen thriving.  Daily Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • DuPage County officials celebrated a ribbon-cutting event on Wednesday in Wheaton where Illinois lawmakers, county health officials, and community members marked the opening of the new Crisis Recovery Center. The $25.8 million facility will open the week of Sept. 2 and offer 24/7 mental health and substance abuse support—serving up to 42 people at a time.  Naperville News 17
