  • The Washington Street Bridge reopened today after more than two years of work and local leaders marked the event with a ribbon cutting and a ceremonial trolley ride—festive music from Chicago's Wackiest Marching Band added to the celebration.  Naperville News 17

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Centennial Beach in Naperville was closed on July 11 after a 27-year-old man died on Thursday when he was pulled from the water and taken to a nearby hospital, while officials continued to investigate the incident.  ABC7 Chicago

CULTURE NEWS

  • Anderson's Bookshop has sold books in Naperville for 150 years, beginning as a pharmacy bookstore in the late 1800s—its history spans five generations of a family-run business. The store will host an in-store celebration in November—owner Becky Anderson’s son Charlie now manages the legacy.  Naperville News 17

FINANCE NEWS

  • State Farm will raise Illinois homeowners' insurance rates by 27% this summer with new policies effective July 15 and renewals on August 15 — nearly 1.5 million policyholders will face an average annual premium increase of $746 due to extreme weather costs. Gov. Pritzker and Illinois PIRG Director Abe Scarr have urged lawmakers to empower the Department of Insurance to review or adjust these hikes to protect local homeowners.  FOX 32

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After a 50-year-old woman died in 2023 from inadequate care in her cell, DuPage County jail officials introduced new policies—doubling mental health staff and initiating individualized treatment plans—to address past failures. At a board meeting on July 8, officials explained that staff had been disciplined and a new step-down program was added to improve detainee care amid ongoing challenges with mental health bed shortages.  Daily Herald
  • DuPage County Undersheriff Eddie Moore explained at a county board meeting (July 8) that protocol changes were implemented at the correctional center after an 11 million dollar settlement followed a detainee's death on June 12; he detailed measures such as doubling mental health staff and streamlining hospital transfers to improve care. Board members questioned the timing of information releases and stressed the need for transparency during ongoing evaluations by state and national agencies.  Naperville News 17
