COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Naperville City Council designated Buddy Poppy Days to run May 21 through May 25 so local volunteers can pick up poppies at the VFW in preparation for Memorial Day. The Memorial Day Parade is set for May 26 with a National Moment of Remembrance at 3PM—activities that honor those who sacrificed their lives in service.  Positively Naperville

CRIME NEWS

  • Naperville police made a gun-related arrest on May 17 at Topgolf when officers on proactive patrol found drugs and a handgun in an unoccupied Honda—Roberto Chacon from Alsip, 28, was charged with aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of cannabis and unlawful use of cannabis by a driver—making it the tenth arrest for a gun-related offense at the lot this year.  Naperville News 17

EDUCATION NEWS

  • During Monday night’s board meeting, Indian Prairie School District 204 honored four Inspire Award winners—special education assistant Janet Ziarko Andersen, Scullen Middle School orchestra teacher Matthew White, Neuqua Valley High School junior Aashka Mehta, and Crossroads Community Church—for their lasting contributions to students. The awards recognized exemplary service, leadership, and community support that have made a significant impact across the district.  Naperville News 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a special meeting, the Naperville Financial Advisory Board voted five to one to recommend a local 1% grocery tax to replace the state tax set to end Jan. 1 so that consumers continue paying $1 per $100 on off-premise groceries. City finance staff warned that without the replacement tax Naperville could lose $6.5 million in revenue—forcing cuts in public safety and public works, and the proposal will be reviewed by City Council on June 17.  Naperville News 17
  • Twenty Illinois mayors from suburban and downstate areas endorsed Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi in his Senate bid to replace Dick Durbin. The coalition includes leaders from Schaumburg, West Peoria, Naperville, and Moline — and he has already raised $19 million in campaign funds.  FOX 32
