Western DuPage Special Recreation Association is celebrating 50 years with a year-long series of events that began earlier this year.

Families and participants enjoy special anniversary programs and can look forward to more community events during the summer.

The Naperville Municipal Band continues its Behind the Horn series—featuring Rita Grasser's 23-year journey from teaching to music—with weekly shows at 7:30 p.m. every Thursday in Central Park through August 12.

Arts DuPage celebrates its 10th anniversary by designating each month to a unique art form, with June focusing on Museum Month at Naper Settlement.

The venue will host Naper Nights on June 19—20 featuring tribute bands for Aretha Franklin, Sly and the Family Stone, AC/DC, and Ozzy Osbourne at $15—$25.

Nicholas Lodge, an English tile maker, arrived in Naperville in 1872 to run the Drain-Tile and Brick Works and build kilns.

Active in local Masonic groups, he died on Jan. 18, 1917, with funeral rites held at his home and the Naperville Cemetery (per Rev. Randell).

The NWS reported that an EF-0 tornado touched down near Gartner Road and Olesen Drive on the east side of Naperville on Thursday, June 11 — it stayed on the ground for 2 minutes and traveled 1.3 miles, snapping trees — before moving into Lisle.

Illinois led the way with nuclear energy when Dresden-1, the first commercial U.S. plant, began operations near Naperville in 1960.
