Wayne Fischer, a longtime leader at the local American Legion Post 43, helped set up a system to place flags on more than 3,000 veterans’ graves and organized Memorial Day and other commemorative programs in Naperville—his behind-the-scenes work honored many who served.

His efforts also included coordinating programs for World War II, the Korean conflict, and Vietnam, demonstrating deep community commitment.

Little Friends is planning to introduce healthier food options in its programs in the coming months — a move that comes as the organization manages concerns over Medicaid funding and a state $1 billion shortfall after celebrating its 60th anniversary in May.

Delmar Leroy Kroehler was born in Naperville and began working as a machine operator for Kroehler Furniture Manufacturing in 1922—he later became president and grew the company into the world’s largest upholstered furniture maker with 22 plants while also building affordable homes for workers before the Naperville plant closed in 1978.

DuPage County ecologists led by aquatic resources supervisor Andres Ortega are raising Hine’s emerald dragonflies at the Urban Stream Research Center in Warrenville to combat habitat loss — the program, which began in 2016, now produces 200-300 adult dragonflies annually.

On June 3, Naperville city council approved a first reading of an ordinance that would add a four-way stop sign at West Street and Jefferson Avenue & directed the Transportation, Engineering and Development department to submit a report on additional traffic calming measures by June 17. Some residents and council members urged officials to explore alternative fixes and broader solutions to reduce speeding along Jefferson Avenue from River Road to Mill Street.

On June 26 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and June 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the Grow Wellness Foundation will host Petals, Ponds & Pathways, a two-day self-guided garden walk through six private Naperville gardens presented with Aquascape to support community mental wellness.

Guests who buy tickets online by June 23 will receive a self-guiding map via email while later ticket purchases cost $20 at 2186 University Drive and proceeds will benefit nonprofit mental health care programs.
