  • Naperville is hosting a busy Mother’s Day weekend with a Rotary Club drive for diaper and mom essentials, a plant sale at a local garden, live theatre shows and art activities planned from today through May 11. CRIME NEWS

  • Naperville police are monitoring an online trend that encourages a large teen gathering downtown tonight — which they say could turn unsafe — and will station extra officers while urging parents to speak with their teens — stressing the need for caution in these meetups.  Naperville News 17
  • On Wednesday a federal judge sentenced Chicago man Sedgwick Williams to 50 years in prison for planning kidnap schemes at gunpoint in Naperville and Westchester—his co-defendant Tai Hon La will be sentenced on June 3.  Daily Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new biographical sketch honors Civil War veteran Jacob F. Lehman, who enlisted in the 12th Illinois Cavalry on January 2 and later worked as a tinsmith and factory finisher after moving to Naperville. Born on October 5 in Wheeling, he served under General Custer before being honorably discharged on December 31 and died on December 7—his service is marked by a commemorative grave and memorial services in town.  Positively Naperville
  • Naper Settlement opened the Selling Kroehler exhibit that shows how Kroehler Manufacturing used unique marketing strategies aimed at women to change a century of consumer habits—visitors can view original campaigns and interactive tools until December.  Daily Herald
  • Today Chicago native Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as pope and took the name Pope Leo XIV, making him the first American to lead the church — Bishop Ronald A.   • Naperville North junior pitcher Gabi Chmiel pitched a complete game four-hitter on May 7 to help her team edge Neuqua Valley 3-2 — she struck out 12 batters and walked 4. Coach Jerry Kedziora said her added confidence and steady screwball led the Huskies to their fifth straight DuPage Valley Conference win — marking a clear turnaround from her earlier struggles.  Naperville Sun
  • Local quarterback Payton Thorne signed as an undrafted free agent with the Cincinnati Bengals on April 26 and left for rookie minicamp in Cincinnati on Thursday—he now hopes to earn a roster spot by learning from experienced players.  Naperville Sun
  • Naperville North shortstop/pitcher Matt Sonnenschein changed his mind about ending his college baseball career after a visit to Wisconsin-La Crosse campus—he accepted a spot on the team and now plans to play college baseball there.
