Houseplants 101

About this event

On November 19, 2026, Amanda Thomsen will present “House Plants 101” for the Garden Club of Inverness. This free program will be held at 9:30 a.m. at All Saints Lutheran Church at 630 South Quentin, Palatine IL 60067. Meeting begins at 9”30; program begins at 10:30.

Amanda Thomsen is a horticulturist, garden designer, key note speaker, freelance writer, backyard consultant, author and shop-owner based in suburban Chicago. With 25 years of experience as a professional horticulturist, land scape designer, and project manager, Amanda is dedicated to infusing fun, creativity, and humor into an industry often perceived as traditional and rule bound. She speaks at events of all sizes across the United States, inspiring audiences to embrace a more playful approach to gardening. She occasionally shows up in Fine Gardening magazine and her first book, Kiss My Aster, is getting a reboot and re-release in February 2027. Her shop, Aster Gardens located in Lemont, started its 4th year in May 2026.

Thomsen’s presentation will transform a gardener who says, “I can grow anything outside, but inside is a “Go To Die Zone” into a believer of growing houseplants. Amanda will bring lots of plants and plant care materials to discuss. If you see some thing you like, many items will be available for purchase and Amanda will appreciate not having to lug as many things home.
