About this event

Presenter

Peter Huff, PhD – Chief Mission Officer, Professor of Theology

Title of Presentation

“All that is solid melts into air: America’s Rapidly Changing Religious Landscape”

Abstract

Will Herberg’s Protestant, Catholic, Jew (1955) offered an informed portrait of religious diversity in the United States at the middle of the twentieth century. Rates of religious affiliation and attendance were high, religion was in vogue among members of the intellectual class, and Herberg’s tripartite model of American religious identity enjoyed widespread acceptance from Hollywood to the White House. Now, just over seventy years later, the highly acclaimed book’s image of America is virtually unrecognizable. This presentation’s title, borrowed from the Communist Manifesto, speaks to the ephemeral quality of institutions and traditions in late capitalist society. The presentation addresses factors contributing to America’s rapidly changing religious landscape and parallel transformations in the academic study of U.S. religious life and thought.
