About this event

In January 1942, twelve American navy nurses stationed at a makeshift hospital, were taken as prisoners under the Empire of Japan. Despite being prisoners, the nurses maintained rank and provided nursing care to thousands of inmates, providing care and compassion to wounded soldiers and prisoners. As World War II raged on, food rations dwindled and mass starvation began, yet the twelve nurses continued to provide care. By the time of their liberation, all had their own health problems and each weighed less than 100 pounds. All twelve came home. Travel back in time with local journalist and author Dr. Emilie Le Beau Lucchesi to learn about these incredible women, and the inspiring impact they had on their fellow inmates. This library program has been made possible through a partnership between the White Oak Library District and the Village of Romeoville.
